Walpole Outdoors doesn’t just add value to homes all over the country, we also work on large scale projects in the historical and hospitality sector. Custom built Walpole products are used in a myriad of buildings all over the United States from pergolas creating beautiful outdoor spaces to custom railings and lattice privacy panels on the buildings themselves. One particular example is our work on the Ocean House, a historic hotel in Westerly Rhode Island.
Located in the Watch Hill section of Westerly the Ocean House is one of the few remaining grand ocean front hotels in New England. Built in 1868, the beautiful seaside property got a lot of use through the years. In 2003 the building was shuttered due to the wear and tear a oceanside building sustains over the years. Luckily for the Ocean House extensive restoration work was started only a few years later and it was reopened in all it’s original glory.
Walpole Outdoors was invited to participate in the reconstruction project in part because of our experience in historic restoration; notably our work installing designing and fabricating fencing and gates at the Edith Wharton House in Lenox, Mass.
Our in-house design and engineering team worked hand-in-hand with the contractor and structural engineers on the project for two months to finalize details on the Ocean House project including conceptual drawings and a 3-D model, assembled to show how we would execute the architect’s structural concepts.
Over the course of the Ocean House restoration Walpole supplied hundreds of feet of exterior railing, wall caps, fence, gates and arbors, all factory pre-painted white and ready for a quick, mess free installation.
In all, more than 300 shop drawings and elevations were produced by Walpole’s engineers, and numerous prototypes, material approval samples, finishes, and components were submitted. Walpole’s role in the restoration grew with the added task of creating faux lattice panels, ogee curved thick wall caps, steel framed 20′ wide gates and additional privacy partitions.
Pieces for the project were fabricated by Walpole Outdoors using the versatile and durable wood alternative AZEK which will ensure that the Ocean House is looking its best for years and years to come with little to no maintenance.
When all was complete the Ocean House was ready to reopen and serve New England travelers once more. The property now functions as a seaside hotel and is available to rent for functions.
