Fall is here once again so it’s time to break out those deep colors and cozy textures. One thing you may be thinking about as you transform your living space for the season is what plants and flowers look best in the fall?
An Old Classic – Chrysanthemums
When you think of fall flowers chrysanthemums (or mums as they are commonly known) are probably first on your mind. These fall favorites are lush in hue and texture blooming in vibrant colors like yellow, orange, red, gold and deep burgundy.
Mums are hearty enough to survive until a serious frost and can provide splashes of color either inside or outside. Mums thrive in fall because they do not require a ton of sunlight like summer flowers and the cold can even make them more vibrant!
You may think of them as a spring flower but pansies are also great for fall. Whether you are growing them indoors or outside you will see successful blooms throughout the season. Unlike spring you will want to choose pansies in autumn colors like gold, orange and red. You can find varieties in virtually every hue imaginable!
Pansies are also hearty and can withstand a bit of frost. These guys will hang around until the first significant frost.
Marigolds are another vibrant bloom to add to your autumn container garden. Though they are known for their golden color, marigolds can actually come in a variety of shades including red and orange.
These are a good choice for bloom in late summer to early fall since they usually do better in the warmer temperatures.
Since the real cold doesn’t usually hit until October these will still make a great addition to a fall garden and bridge the gap between seasons.
There are a myriad of flowers and plants that do well in the fall weather and look great in autumn container gardens. Use any of these colorful blooms but don’t forget those lush evergreens and seasonal grasses that give the garden that extra bit of life!
